Get powered up
CarPlug is always happy to answer your questions about electric vehicle charging stations. We've already tackled some of the most frequently asked questions here.
As a rapidly growing mode of transportation, the electric vehicle (commonly called an EV) is an environmentally friendly alternative to the gasoline-powered vehicle. Battery-powered EVs don't require petroleum-based fuels to operate. Instead, they plug into electric vehicle charging stations to get powered up. Over the next several years, nearly every automobile manufacturer will offer a plug-in hybrid or a battery-powered electric vehicle. Practical and energy efficient, these vehicles cost very little to operate and are easy to charge. [ back to top ]
There are many reasons to make the switch to an electric vehicle. Maybe you have a long commute to work and want to cut your weekly fuel costs. Perhaps your family wants to become more environmentally conscious. Or you may be someone who embraces new technology and wants to be at the forefront of this emerging transportation method.
You should consider purchasing an electric vehicle if you want to:
Owning an electric vehicle means you may never have to visit the gas pump. But you do need to charge its battery by connecting your vehicle to an electric vehicle charging station, which we call a car plug. With a charging station, your vehicle can plug in at your own home rather than fuel up. When you purchase your EV, you'll receive a Level 1 charger, which provides a 120-volt charge and takes up to 10 hours to charge to full power. Our Level 2 charging station, however, will provide a quicker charge for less money. Its 240-volt charge can power up your vehicle to a full charge in just 4 hours.
There are many different types of EV charging stations, including stations that charge two vehicles at one time. Free-standing, pole- or wall-mounted units are available in public charging stations, at commercial buildings and in residences.

CarPlug is your one-stop source for installing EV charging stations at your residence or business, whether it's an existing building or a new construction. Our partnership with GE, Eaton and Leviton enables us to provide the highest quality car plug products to fit your specific situation and site, and our dedicated team of certified, experienced electricians are trained and qualified to complete an installation of your EV charging station. Electric costs will vary depending on local utility rates, what kind of EV charging station you install and what vehicle you own. Regardless, the cost of powering your EV will be significantly less than what you would pay at the pump to fuel a traditional vehicle. Based on currently available electric vehicles and average electricity rates, it's estimated that an EV owner will save approximately 75% in fuel costs by switching from gasoline to electricity. For instance, to power your vehicle for 100 miles using a Level 2 charger, it may require up to 4 hours of charging time at a cost of about a $1 a day.
Also, a Level 2 charging station will enable you to charge your EV during off-peak hours, letting you benefit from a lower rate. See below for a comparison of costs, and do the math for yourself to see the true savings of owning an electric vehicle.
| Charge Level | Level 1 Charging Standard residential rate |
Level 2 charging off-peak, residential rate |
| Voltage | 120 volts | 240 volts |
| Charge time | 6-10 hours, anytime | 3-4 hours, overnight |
| Rate | $ 0.12331 kWh* | $ 0.07695 kWh* |
| Charge used | 300 kWh | 300 kWh |
| Estimated monthly cost | $37 | $23 |
